The Paula Red has a romantic story, with a slight hint of mystery. The man who cultivated the very first Paula Red in Michigan in 1960 named the apple in honour of his wife Pauline. The mysterious part? It’s that this man, Lewis Arrends, used a plant whose origin is unknown, perhaps a cousin of the Cortland and the McIntosh.
